Is there such a thing as ‘Public Food Policy’? NO, but there is agricultural policy usually based on the four key food categories which are now killing people. Meat, Wheat, Dairy and Sugar !!! These four food categories are now costing more in ‘chronic illness after consumption’ than the financial benefits derived from these farming practices per se.
The agricultural sector, at farm-gate, contributes 3 percent to Australia’s total gross domestic product (GDP). The gross value of Australian farm production in 2010-11 was $48.7 billion. Compare this figure with that of the total estimated cost of health care and you will be amazed.
In the 2010/11 year healthcare costs rose 6.5% to a staggering $130.3 billion which is nearly $5800 per head of population for the year. Now someone must be speeding a lot of my share on health care because I spend nothing, zilch, ZERO.
What I am suggesting here is our highly enlightened policy makers might well start examining an outmoded agricultural policy – a policy largely imported from the ‘motherland’ and based on the agrarian ideologies from another era. In essence, a largely WASP – ‘White Anglo Saxon Protestant’ nutritional matrix was transported to Australia and policies created based on what was dished up back in the UK. Well this is Australia, a land of potentially plenty of food not just for its inhabitants but also for the rest of the world; a land capable growing a myriad of ‘health giving foods’ which promote life and not death.
As I explain in my book ‘Understanding the Divine Gut’, the cost to the land of these outdated agriculture industries and practices associated with them is also mind boggling. Here are some points our elected representatives might like to ponder if not for now, but also for the health of future generations.
1. More people are suffering from chronic illness as a result of unprocessed proteins becoming stuck and rotting in the body. These proteins are largely made up of decaying meat and dairy products. The country is over proteinised and under fiberised. The measurable health consequences are nothing short of tragic. I would like to know what part of the 6.5% increase in health costs was as a result of chronic digestive disorders?
2. More people are suffering from wheat intolerances because of hybridisation since the 1950’s in order to promote ‘greater yield’ per hectare, thus more $$$ for the farmers. The wheat germ has in effect become corrupted, yielding no benefits whatsoever to the body. Gluten intolerance numbers have skyrocketed in the last decade. Why ?
3. More people are developing ‘sugar based cancer emergence’ due to higher levels of bio-acidity as a result of an over consumption of white refined sugar also known as ‘White Death’. It’s a known fact that the cancer fungus loves an acidic body as opposed to an alkaline body in which it struggles to gain a foothold.
Agricultural diversification has to be taught allaying any fears about the process of change. I will address some alternatives such as more plant protein based cropping in the next blog piece. In the meantime I invite you to sit with the figures I have shared and ask yourself where you fit into this dead-end scenario and how you can change things now.
In conclusion, I will make a prediction. The writing is on the wall for large scale animal production and whilst the sickness industry is expanding in one direction, I forecast it’s demise in good time too. Why? More people are taking their own health in hand by NOT eating meat, wheat, dairy and sugar products. Each weekend and through my classes, I meet excited people as they embrace the process of change within themselves. The customer will decide the fate ultimately but wouldn’t it be great if the politicians had enough vision and courage to instigate change so that many of the nearly 400,000 people involved in the Australian farming sector could feel good about their contribution to the health of the nation. While there are other so-called ‘hot potatoes’ being handed around, how about more dialogue on something even more important ?
